Winter Clothing for Small Dogs and Short-Hair Breeds

This is the season to be jolly, and yes, 'tis also the season to wrap ourselves up in the thickest clothing we can put together in order to keep ourselves warm. And just like humans, our pets also need to be kept warm and dry during the coldest time of the year -- winter. Thus it is imperative that we tackle the issue of clothing for our pets, especially the little ones and those with thin and short hair. Pets who need the most protection from the cold during the winter season.

A dog sweater, a dog coat, and a dog raincoat-these are probably the most important articles of clothing that your pet should have in its wardrobe at this time of year. Small dogs such as Chihuahuas, Pugs, Bulldogs, Whippets, Chinese Cresteds, Italian Greyhounds, Jack Russell Terriers, Mini Pinschers, Dachshunds, Basenjis and Bull Terriers should be protected since their natural hair covering is not enough to keep the cold out. Of course, we would not want our dear little pets to freeze to death while we celebrate the festivities of the holidays, right?

Those with short hair especially need a dog sweater, one that they could use throughout the day and be comfortable in. It is important to take into consideration the fabric of the dog sweater since your pet might not be comfy in it (the material of the dog sweater could either be too itchy or too hot for them).

Another article of clothing that is of importance is the dog coat. This pet clothing is for outside use. If one wishes to take his pet for a stroll in the park, he/she should consider wrapping his pet snugly in a dog coat for two reasons: 1) to keep the cold out and 2) for fashion and trendsetting purposes. Besides, a pet owner would not want to expose his pet's bare skin to the chilly winter winds, would he?

Lastly, one should also consider the dog raincoat. There's nothing like bringing your soaking wet dog into the house after a walk in the elements. The extra grooming and clean up around the house can be exhausting, not to mention the pet being uncomfortably wet. One is much better off putting their pet in a waterproof or water-resistant raincoat to avoid all that trouble. There are lots of dog raincoats out there that are both functional and fashionable.

Lastly, be sure to get the appropriate measurements for your dog before purchasing pet clothes. Length --base of the neck to base of the tail, Girth -- measure the circumference at largest part of the chest and Neck-- measure circumference of the neck where the collar falls.
