Akita Inu is a large, rugged, and powerful dog breed with a wolf-like appearance. It is a very handsome looking dog. Due to its calm and dignified nature, it is quite desirable as a pet. It is a very quiet animal and hardly ever barks. It is also easy to housebreak. Moreover, it is not overly-dependent on the owner and does not have much separation anxiety. However it has a dominant nature and shows strong-willed mind, so the owner has to take care to show confidence and take charge.
This dog breed is usually reserved with strangers. It also is very protective of its owner because of its guarding instincts. Both these things call for socialization. If Akita Inu is not socialized properly it will show aggression towards people and other animals, so it is better to start socializing them at an early age.
This dog breed is extremely possessive about its food. It is advised to keep children and other animals away from the dog when it is eating.
This breed is also not suitable for the allergic people because it sheds heavily.
It is aggressive towards other dogs of the same sex, so you should never leave two male dogs or two female dogs alone together. As a general advice, do not keep any other pet if you have an Akita Inu in the house.
Training might be challenging sometimes because this dog is quite assertive and gets bored easily. You have to treat it with respect, praise it often enough and reward it.
Unlike other dogs, Akita Inu requires vigorous physical activity only occasionally.
If you are keeping a dog for the first time, Akita Inu will not be a good choice.
