History

While the exact origin of the Austrian Brandlbracke has been greatly disputed, it is widely believed that the breed can be traced back to 17th century Austria. Enthusiasts believe these dogs to have descended from such breeds as the Keltenbracken, Tyrolean Bracke, and the Slovak Kopov, though this has never been proven scientifically or otherwise.

Throughout its history, the Austrian Brandlbracke has been most commonly used for scenting, tracking, hunting, and retrieving game such as fox and deer, proving its superior abilities to work while providing companionship.

Today, while the Austrian Brandlbracke has attained a regional popularity as a hunting and companion dog, the breed remains rather rare outside of its native Austria.
