Armant Dog Breed


Origin and History of the Breed

The present-day Armant’s place of origin is France/Holland. The crosses of Napoleon’s dogs with Briards have yielded the present day Armant Dog. The Armant had been originally bred in Egypt. This had been bred as a guard dog.

A General Description of the Breed

The dog has got long, rough and shaggy coat. It comes in the following colors- black, black and tan, gray and grayish yellow. The head of the Armant Dog is broad. It has got a strong muzzle that is medium-sized and proportional to the size of its head. It has got small, round, dark-colored eyes. It has got erect or dropped ears. The nose is usually black in color but may vary according to the color of the dog’s coat.

The Arment has got a medium sized strong neck and a deep, muscular and broad chest with well-sprung ribs. Its forelegs are straight and strong and hind legs are powerful with hocks well bent. The dog’s feet are small and compact. It has got arched toes and its toes are thickly padded. It has a long tail that may be curled. The tail may even be docked. The dog can carry its tail curled and also in an upright manner.

Height

Heights of Armant Dogs vary between 21 inches and 25 inches. However, males can become tall over 25 inches too.

Weight

Weights of mature dogs of the breed lie between 50 pounds and 65 pounds.

Temperament of the Breed

The Armant is a pleasant working dog. It has got a fearless and loyal temperament. This dog responds well to training. It needs a dominating owner. It is found to be happy and playful and is obedient and always eager to please it owners. It has got moderate to high levels of energy. It requires moderate socialization efforts. It adjusts well with other dogs as also with cats and other kinds of canine and non-canine pets. It is a very suitable pet for playing around with children too.
As herders Armant Dogs are quick and agile. They are swift and display well balanced movements. These dogs are never afraid of their predators. They boldly protect members of their herd and masters. Armants are also found to be pretty perceptive and are quick to respond suitably in case of adverse situations. No wonder why they are commonly chosen as watchdogs.

Though all Armant Dogs are in general intelligent and loving by nature some are brighter and can learn up things quicker. Some others may seem more stubborn and obstinate and slow at picking up skills. Again, while some Armants are extroverted and can befriend strangers also some others tend to stay aloof and withdrawn.

Better suited to outdoor or indoor lifestyle?

The Armant Dog should preferably be kept in such an environment/home where it gets plenty of opportunities for exercising and interacting.

How active is the breed?

Just as other breeds of herding dogs Armants too need considerable exercising. They may be taken out daily for a long walk or jog. Walks, runs and playing with balls can provide the dogs sufficient exercise.
