Basset Hound puppies are pretty versatile little dog, they can fit in just as easily in the country as they can in the big city. And this just isn't usually the case for most breeds, some dogs are more at home laying around the apartment and others need fields to whip through. There are not many in between.
The Basset Hound can thrive in either environment equally. They need some exercise, but not too much, they have energy, but not inexhaustible amounts, they're not too big and they're not too small. As we said, they're versatile.
And Basset Hounds have got a noses on them that are just without compare in the animal kingdom. These dogs can smell things that we couldn't even dream about. And they will, often to very comical result. If your neighbor is having a BBQ their ears and eyes will perk up, only we're talking about your neighbor three blocks away not your next door neighbor. They simply live in a very different world of smell than we do, and that makes owning a Basset Hound extra interesting and often fascinating to observe.
Because of their size, around 45 to 65 pounds many Basset Hounds will fit under the weight limits in city apartment buildings and condos, which is great. And because they don't need to be tended to all the time, they make a good city pet. However, they don't just lie there and look at you all day like the Bulldog, they have a medium, very even-keeled energy level and need some physical activity.
The Basset Hounds will shed, so please know this in advance of buying a Basset Hound puppy. You're going to have to vacuum a bit and brush your dog to keep him healthy and happy. Bathing and clipping will need to be performed periodically as well.
Many people want to adopt a dog, and you can look for a Bassett Hound at your local rescue shelter, but you may be disappointed if one isn't available. Still, bless your heart for trying that route at all.
The best way to find a good puppy is to network with dog owners, really, this is the best way. If you see somebody walking down the street with a Bassett Hound, flag them down and ask where they got them. It's a great way to get information about reputable breeders. You can also find them online, but be wary of funny business.
Towards the end of their lives these hounds may have ear problems and can have a genetic problem with blood clotting. Get to the vet regularly. And have fun searching for Basset Hound puppies, these are great dogs that are perfect for so many folks.
