A puppy can be shy creatures at first, especially when brought home to a new surrounding. He is unsure of what's going on around him and who he can trust, so drinking water may be the last thing on his mind. On the other hand, a puppy may be full of energy, and just too busy to drink water. Staying hydrated is important for all dogs, especially puppies as they are growing and developing every day.
- 1Offer water at all times during the day for a puppy. Be sure the water is fresh, clean and free of any dirt or bugs that may have accumulated over time.
- 2Add warm water to the puppy's food if he is not drinking enough water on his own. Water can be added to hard kibble or canned food to make a soup-like mixture that may be easier for the puppy to drink.
- 3Take the puppy for a long walk or spend extra playtime outside to ensure that he will be thirsty and anxious to drink water when it's offered. Don't let him drink too much or this may cause indigestion.
- 4Add several ice cubes to the water in the bowl. Some pets prefer cold drinking water over lukewarm water that has been sitting out for a few hours.
- 5Pour a few drops of chicken or beef broth into the puppy's water bowl. The smell may entice him over and get him to drink his fair share of water for the time being.
- 6Check to make sure the water bowl is situated in a safe and secure area. Lots of noise and traffic may cause the puppy to shy away from the water bowl.
- 7Show the puppy the water bowl. Rustle the cool water, maybe even splashing a few drops onto the nose and muzzle of the puppy to entice him to drink on his own.
