5 Steps to Groom Your Afghan Hound

1) Grooming time

Your grooming sessions need not be a methodical and tedious process. Try to keep it fun so that both you and your Afghan are relaxed and making the best of what can be a most gratifying experience. Be sure to keep your grooming time short until your dog is used to it. Gently pet sensitive areas like the feet, tail, ears, back and feet throughout as this will minimize any anxiety your pet might feel.

2) Brush

Be sure to purchase a brush that is particular to your Afghan's hair. Hounds have short, smooth coats and they benefit from a rubber brush or a hound glove. Brushing will assist in keeping your dog's hair in good condition by spreading natural oils, removing dirt, preventing hurtful tangles, and keeping skin irritant free.

3) Bathing

Be sure to use a mild dog shampoo for grooming your Afghan Hound and follow these easy steps:
a) Start by brushing your pet, removing any dirt and mats.
b) Use a spray hose or large unbreakable container to wet your pet completely, taking care to not saturate the nose, mouth, ears or eyes.
c) Working from head to tail, massage in shampoo before thoroughly rinsing.

4) Teeth

Just like our teeth, dogs need to have their teeth cleaned every day. Be sure to use a flavored toothpaste designed to appeal to dogs as this will go a long way toward establishing a daily dental routine. Better to use a toothbrush specifically designed for dogs rather than a dog chew or toy.

5) Pile It On

Praise, praise and more praise. Make grooming your Afghan Hound a game of sorts. Give him or her lots of love and maybe even a treat after a session. This will insure cooperation and pleasure associated with the act of grooming. And above all else, have fun with your Afghan Hound.
