Afador Dog Breed

The Afador is a cross between the Afghan Hound and the Labrador Retriever. Like most cross-breeds, it displays a combination of the distinct characteristics of both, or all the breeds. Of medium height and built, it has a very long, smooth and fine coat and the hair on the face is usually short. Most common colours for this breed would be shades of red, shades of beige, black and black and white. As well they would often have a seemingly dark mask on their faces.

Originating from Alaska, the Afador is known as an independent and genius breed and could be an effective watchdog. Training is another matter though, as the breed is not dependent on anything or anyone. Proud and alert, its distinct characteristic would be to run after anything that moves or runs quickly. Being a mix between an Afghan and a Labrador, the breed is generally considered energetic and active. They can be very calm indoors but outside they tend to run around to expend the tons of energy they usually have. They bark loudly so the Afador can also sound off as a good alarm for the home to ward off intruders or strangers.

The breed gets along well with children, especially older ones, provided they are not harassed. Its life expectancy would be about 10-12 years and needs a lot of supervision as it is prone to injuries and has a low pain threshold. The Afador is classified in the hound group and designer dog group

Training your Afador can be very rewarding but Afadors as a breed are very independent which can make training them a bit difficult. Understanding the mind set that you need to be in to train this breed is important.

One of the most important things an animal trainer can do is win the trust and respect of the animal they are training. This fact directly applies to the training of dogs. Dogs are social pack animals that naturally need to follow a leader. Becoming the leader in the eyes of the dog you are training, is one of the most important tasks to implement in any successful dog-training program.

Until you have earned the trust and respect of your Afador, it will be difficult for any good training program to succeed. These needed characteristics must be earned using positive interaction. After the dog has learned the trainer is worthy of its trust and respect the training being taught will quickly progress.

Many new owners will mistake love and affection as a way to earn trust and respect from their pet. While love and affection is a needed attribute, trust and respect is earned. This can be earned by not allowing your pet to get away with everything it wants to do, no matter how cute and adorable it may be. Setting boundaries establishing what is an acceptable and unacceptable behavior is important.

These boundaries are appreciated by dogs because of the similarity to rules normally set in nature by the pack leader. With the setting of these rules by the leader, every dog in the pack knows the actions, which are expected, and learns its place within the pack. The structure provided allows the pack to work as a single entity for hunting and survival. Your dog needs this type of leadership.
