American mastiffs are a new breed of mastiff, introduced recently. These dogs were created when the English mastiff was crossbred with an Anatolian shepherd (or Anatolian mastiff), creating a dog that drools less and has fewer joint problems. American mastiffs are seven eighths English mastiff and one eight Anatolian. They're not aggressive, although you should introduce your pet to other dogs early on in life to prevent dog aggression from developing. It's important for a dog as large as the American mastiff to be trained early on, so it will behave properly.
American mastiffs were developed by Flying W Farms in Ohio, as part of an attempt to improve the breed, removing the genetic issues that were occurring in the English mastiff. The Anatolian was chosen because they are a large type of dog that's genetically compatible with English mastiffs. They also live a long time, which may expand the life span of the American mastiff beyond that of the English mastiff. They drool less, and are highly intelligent, producing a dog that's excellent for guardian purposes.
American mastiffs are between twenty eight and thirty five inches tall at the shoulder. Males tend to weigh between a hundred and sixty and two hundred pounds, and females are between a hundred forty and a hundred eighty pounds. American mastiffs come in apricot, fawn, and brindle colors, but always have a black muzzle. Color seems to be unrelated to other factors like temperament or lifespan. That means that it doesn't matter what color American mastiff you adopt.
American mastiffs are calm and loyal animals who are good with children. They bond strongly with their family, although they can seem a little aloof. They love being in the same room with their family members, and will do just about anything to please. While these dogs aren't particularly aggressive, they do make great guardians. They have a lot of courage when their families are threatened, and can pin down intruders in the home. While these dogs aren't incredibly active, they must have exercise every day. They also need a lot of attention from a dedicated family, just like English mastiffs.
American mastiffs live around ten years, with the right diet and care. However, their exact lifespan isn't known, because the breed is so new. They're eager to please and intelligent, but can be stubborn during training. It's important to be both firm and consistent while you're training your American mastiff. Keep training sessions to about ten or fifteen minutes at a time, and never yell to punish your puppy. These sensitive dogs can become unwilling to be trained if spoken to harshly. Instead, discipline your American mastiff by speaking in an even voice, without shouting. Obedience training can be a big help to owners of these dogs.
